Tyreek Hill’s Traffic Incident and the Forgotten “Talk”

The Importance of “The Talk”

The event in which Tyreek Hill was recently threatened by police shows one of the existing Black American issues. It depicted the fact that efficiency and minimal density of nutrition can be easily ignored especially in the event of a calamity. The “talk” is an important, even if a somewhat traumatic, experience that many Black parents go through with their children. It is also about self-Defense when police increases encounter for hazard.

Experientially it is a rulebook of conduct called ‘the talk’ by the society. It tells you how to behave in police encounters: do not make any fast actions, do not put hands into pockets, yes sir or ma’am. To Black Americans, this talk is a shield, a way to protect yourself.

Although this is not safety assurance mechanism, it has capabilities of reducing tension in certain occassions. Black drivers are disproportionately subjected to police stops and thus have increase chances of hostile engagements. The talk is supposedly to bring some sort of balance even if it is only very tiny in the favor of the driver.

A Personal Encounter with the Police

Some years ago I went through a traffic stop incident that awakened me to the reality of “the talk”. A police car tailed me for a few minutes and then signalled for me to stop. Sometimes I thought it was going to stop and I fully expected it to do so at a certain point, so I made sure I got ready for it. I kept my documents ready, put them beside me in the front and just waited.

The flashing lights came. The officer said my inspection sticker had been expiring. All in all, I hadn’t even realized thanks to the pandemic. The officer was considerate but before any talk, he saw me follow all the instructions I was taught during the ‘talk’. I lowered the window, made sure not to touch anything and assured the officer that I did not have any weapons on me.

It wasn’t fear. It was survival mode. Every Black American realises that such simple actions can be a matter of life and death. These behaviors my mother had instilled in me and so every time I was interacting with the police, I would always exhibit such behaviors.

Another Traffic Stop – A Different Outcome

In another interview I had, I did the usual traffic violation; been caught while driving at 5 mph above the speed limit. This time there seated a white woman beside me and she was in the passenger seat. As the police officer arrived she started complaining why we were stopped for such a minor offenses. It was nothing less than vocal and her irritation was clearly seen by all.

I gently touched her knee to make her to stop. She never really needed “the talk” because she didn’t get it. It clearly wasn’t risky for her to say something back to the officer. But I knew better. Again I put my arms on the table, held my ID and explained to the officer that I was not carrying any weapon.

The rules of “the talk” were clear: It is important not to make any fast actions, do not quarrel and always remain polite. Such actions are not because Black drivers are something wrong but because the chances of things escalating are higher. It is a coping mechanism that has been built in us year after year.

The Reality of Police Interactions for Black Americans

Such experience as Tapri’s has become a recurring norm with the recent events in the American society where Black families such as the one that belonged to Tyreek Hill has been faced with the rigid reality of the black community. Police stopped him and he forgot “the talk.” It is quite comprhensible as it may happen to anyone more so if only being a policeman. Being a popular football star, one would expect that Hill believed that he could not be taken that easy given his NFL celebrity status. However, in that moment; he was not a Miami Dolphins football star. He was a Black man and in the history of police encounters, especially with the police of that era, we know the colour played a significant part.

The cold hard truth is that Blacks are treated more assertively when they get behind the wheel. Research confirms this. Black Americans are more likely than white Americans in being apprehended by the police and thus the chances of the interaction turning rogue the higher. Many thought that Hill was naive but she was not alone since even the best NFL players fail to remember ‘’the talk’’.

Why “The Talk” Exists

Talk is not protection per se, but ‘the talk’ is an umbrella of a kind. They lead to one sort of conflict management, which is the unfortunate way of deescalating a situation before things go out of hand. It is a weapon specially created for a society that is oppressive and for moments in which one’s life is at risk. Over the years and across generations, this information has been imparted from black parents to their children because they understand that black people’s encounter with police is different.

Of course, none of this is Hill’s fault. Still, most drivers, including white ones, can yell at police officers, disobey them and escape physical violence. Recordings of such experiences are common even common in internet. It is often the people who fiercely cry loudest over compliance issues who never practice basic compliance when it comes to their fellow citizens. But they don’t face the same danger.

Tyreek Hill did not deserve the treatment a got. He did not incite the violence but he did not adhere to the behavioral formulas set out in the “talk.” Forgetting about that talk even for a moment raised the likelihood.

Reflecting on the Traffic Incident

After being detained, in a press conference Hill said that he wished he could do it differently if he had a chance to do it over. His words rather demonstrated a better realization of the world that he lives in as a black man in the United States of America. He understood that even if he had no right to be angry at the shop assistant he also contributed to the aggression by his behavior.

The purpose of the talk is to not encounter such situations. It is supposed to guarantee Black people’s well-being and survival. And it is all about avoiding conflict early enough, even when one is right. It is something that Hill has come to comprehend better though the lessons were never meant to be forgotten.

The Talk: A Survival Guide Rooted in Love

But ‘the talk’ isn’t just about rules and what is and isn’t allowed. It is the object of love, a sign of protection and a reminder of the tradition that goes down the generations. It is a fighting survival manual forged in decades, if not centuries of police interactions that have had the opposite of the intended effect. It must be stated though that although the job of a police officer is to serve and to protect, a sad truth is that a large number of policemen do not treat Black drivers fairly.

All these lessons are illustrated in the case of Hill. In his press conference, Hill is adorned with frustrations; however, he embraced new knowledge. The talk may not always work but whenever it is applied it as an increased chance of a peaceful resolution. People find it necessary to arm themselves to the teeth in a world where the color of your skin decides whether you’ll get arrested or shot by the police.

Why the Talk is Critical for Black Americans

The talk stems from the fact that black American’s life has higher outcomes when it comes to their interaction with the police. Teach people not to confront, to act as if they are submitting and to endure the confrontation. The lessons are not drawn up based on theory but rather on what has been learnt from the past generations.

It is a tool that means to inoculate Black people for the possibility of violent treatment irrespective of how polite and peaceful they may be. The talk sets them up for that even if they’re in the right. It is a mechanism that is designed to ensure people survive in environment that is designed to eliminate them.

The Lessons Hill Can’t Forget

Tyreek Hill for example should be seen as that experience. A number of codes have to be memorized, and the Black people who come across the police have to adhere to them. What celebrities may consider as a preference, they receive a taste of what the black person has been going through for so long, their color is louder than their celebrity.

It is a discussion which aims at safeguarding Black Americans against any incidents or anything that can cause harm to them. It’s not a certain way but it brings the possibility of getting a way out of the conflict without involving the use of force. Hence, I have retained its significance, and so should, all of you.

The Talk as a Tool for Protection

To Black Americans, “ the talk” is an act of love and necessity. It’s an exigent one for living in a society where even meetings with police officers may become lethal. Tyreek Hill and police interaction is a harsh lesson why there is “the talk” and why it should be a constant conversation.

The rules of the talk may seem simple: Turn the wheel with your hands, do not jerk and try to stay courteous. But these actions flowed from four decades or more of experience as to how police interaction can go wrong. In a way, we must understand the constraints of the talk’s purpose is really to ensure that you make it home.”

In a world that is still oppressive and produces stats where Black people are more likely to be stopped or harassed by the police, ‘the talk’ is still relevant. In fact, Hill gave instances which exposed even the famous personalities cannot escape the rules.
